today, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced this year’s recipients of its so-called genius grants, a wide-ranging list of 23 overachievers. MacArthur Fellows (as they’re officially known) are “individuals who show exceptional creativity in their work and the prospect for still more in the future. the fellowship is designed to provide recipients with the flexibility to pursue their creative activities in the absence of specific obligations or reporting requirements.”
Punch Brothers frontman, Chris Thile, who lives in New York City, is among 23 people who got word out of the blue in recent weeks that they had been chosen:
I think I’m going to be super-boring with the money and have it as security. i’ve been taking work that is very lucrative but creatively bankrupt. instead, I can just be working on my music, and that’s heavenly.
